It is 20 km from the capital Mytilene away. Its inhabitants are mainly in olive cultivation, fishing and the growing tourism in recent years. The beautiful village squares, with the trees, the spacious coffee shops, the tourist Perama, the beaches of Eyreiaki, the great hall with the library Kountoura in Skopelos, its picturesque churches and traditional buildings – homes and factories – who have made it known all over the world, invite the visitor. It is renowned for the production of ouzo from about 1800.
The old castles Paliokastro, Kastelli of Pappados and the Castle in Meti are attractions in the area. But worth to admire are the roof paintings (1909) in the Mansion of Brana, hosting the current City Hall and other buildings of Gera. The beautiful village squares, with the trees, the spacious coffee shops, the tourist Perama, the beaches of Eyreiaki, the great hall with the library Kountoura in Skopelos, its picturesque churches and traditional buildings – homes and factories – who have made it known all over the world, invite the visitor. It is renowned for the production of ouzo from about 1800. Today, two small industries of ouzo production are operating. Also, in the area they make traditionally manufactured sweets, especially syrupy like the “baklava”.
It is worth visiting the Olive Press – Museum “Archipleagos”, which is an architectural monument of the industrial value of Papados. It worked continuously until the early ’70s, and closed and handed over to the ravages of time, until in 1999 the property passed to the Company Archipelago, which made the ambitious project of restoration and converting it into a museum.
A few kilometers from Gera at the municipality of Evergetoula there is a wetland, which hosts a large number of plants, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects. Some species are characterized by their scarcity.
Perama presents more options for nightlife, with its picturesque traditional cuisine restaurants and bars full of youth. A path begins from here towards the mouth of the bay. There are very beautiful fishermen villages: Marmaro, Pirgoi, Avlonas and Ftelia, with picturesque taverns that serve delicious seafood and other delicacies, while you can enjoy swimming in the regions Eyreiaki, Yaros, Tarti, Amparia, fishing outside the Gulf and surfing in the Gulf of Gera. The area Karyona is ideal for hiking, overlooking the Gulf of Gera. And the rural road that leads to the “Sorokos”, a beautiful wooded area with spectacular views.

The Municipality of Gera has 6,985 inhabitants and 86,350 acres of land. Location of the municipality is Papados and it includes 6 municipal districts: Pappados, Mesagros, Paleokipos, Plakados, Skopelos.
The six villages are developed in harmony and during the Turkish occupation the beautiful wooden-roofed basilica churches with masterfully temples such as the St. Ermolaos, St. George, St. Magdalene with the hostels and the Burrows (late 19th century) and Zoodochos Pigi with the marble of 1796 on the temple, were built there. The Turks had been living mainly in Skopelos.
The mills (with the oldest Fidele in 1863) replace the animal moved mills. Perama, the port of Gera, acquires unique industrial buildings such as soap factories and mills and it is serving the entire region as a port. Basic building complex of the area is the tannery and next the scenic view windmill built before 1830. After 1922, refugees have formed in this port the sixth villages of Gera, Perama. The folk painter Theophilos walked around the villages. His works were left only in the old bakery of Mesagros (built in 1922) since all the other were removed.
The architectural monument of the industrial value in Papados worked continuously until the early ’70s and closed and was handed over to the ravages of time, until in 1999 the property was passed to the Company Archipelago – a non-profit organization with an important cultural work in the Aegean – which has the ambitious project of restoration and conversion into a museum.
This work to restore and convert the historic mill into a museum was completed in 2005. The restoration project took about three years (2006-2009) and was done with all the respect to simple architecture of the buildings. At the same time the historic machinery plant was repaired and reopened, giving visitors a true picture of the traditional production process of oil. 112 books are also serviced at the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank from the mill, which form one of the rarest and best files that were saved.Finally a unique thematic contemporary art gallery was created with original paintings inspired by the restoration of the monument, which is painted and offered to the Society of Archipelago, leading Greek Painters.
The oven in Mesagros (former bakery Marmarelli – Chatzikonstanti) was owned by the Ministry of Culture in 1985 and situated in the village of Mesagros. It falls in production and trading sites. This is a ground stone building built at the beginning of the century and it was operated until the end of 1970 like an oven
In the northern wall there is a fresco of Theophilos dimensions 3.60 x 3.50 m., and it dates back to the 1930s and depicts scenes from the history of bread. Very interesting is inside the shaping of space (traditional way of bread making). The restoration of the building was designed to function like a folklore museum.
Great ecological importance for the region of Evergetoula is the wetland system of State Ntipi – Larsos along the river Evergetoula, which is the largest reed bed in the Aegean. The Ntipi-Larsos wetland hosts large numbers of plants, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects. Some species are characterized by their scarcity. The waters of the tributaries of the sources create areas of natural beauty, with the option to afford scope for links in the region, also in the National & European Inventory “Special Areas of Conservation of Nature” Network NATURA 2000.
The Wetland Dipi – Larsos coveres almost the entire surface of stagnant water and is impassable by dense reed beds. Co-existing water plants and others with water reeds presented as the only developed significantly in terms of floristic composition and spatial spread. The rare species were developed on free surfaces and the seasonal or permanent ponds.
Evriaki is located in the Gulf of Gera, shortly before Perama. Here you can enjoy swimming as the landscape of the bay will amaze you. The water is shallow and generally there are several bays – beaches in the Gulf of Gera.
Tarti is located outside of the bay of Gera, at the open waters of the Aegean Sea. It is a beautiful beach with clear water which is at the foot of a verdant hill. Each summer it is full with tourists, who apart from anything else enjoy also fresh fish, served in ample at the picturesque taverns.
